One of my pet peeves is when I find the abbreviation of Illinois done incorrectly. I think everyone in the whole world does it wrong. It doesn't matter if it's an email or a national newspaper. What is so hard about abbreviating the states?
All U.S. state abbreviations are TWO letters. Not three.
We don't abbreviate Pennsylvania with Pen.
We don't abbreviate Minnesota with Min.
We don't abbreviate California with Cal.
So WHY do so many people insist on abbreviating Illinois with Ill?
IT'S IL!!!!

and the s is silent when pronounced. It's Illinois not Illinoise :D Oh wait you already knew that!! Hope you have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank God I write it as IL. LOL
ReplyDeleteI don't abreviate them unless someone has already written them that way and I'm just copying the address from them, because I haven't a clue what the right or wrong way to do it is, and I figure if I don't do it - or, at least, only do it if I'm copying the information from someone else - then I can't be blamed for getting it wrong.
ReplyDeleteMaybe people do that so as to not confuse it with other states like Ildiana, Ilowa or Ilawaii.
ReplyDeleteI would just spell it out entirely but I don't want to piss off the Post Master General (why is he a General anyway?)
ReplyDeleteToo funny. I'll have to admit we tend to call 'em Illinerds (sorry...) because it seems they always drive through Missouri so fast. I'm not guilty of the Ill thing though. Now my pet peave is people calling MissourEE, Missourah. Makes no sense whatsoever.
