I debated whether I would blog about this or not. I just read a new version of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas on a friend's blog. I won't post it here, but you can either google the words "twas the month before christmas" or go here and see one of the several sites I saw with it posted.

In many of our numbered states, at the Capital buildings, alongside "Holiday" trees or Nativity displays is another display from the athiests. Now, I'm all for the freedom of speech. I acknowledge that pagans have been celebrating the Winter Solstice for many many many years, and they have a right to believe what they want. Just as Christians have a right to believe what they want.

This is the display put up in the Capital building here in Illinois. Similar ones are in Washington state, Wisconsin and others. My only issue with this, is that the athiests are asking for tolerance of their beliefs, but are not allowing for tolerance of the Christian belief. To me, this message is very negative. Religion hardens hearts? It enslaves minds?

Do the Christian displays of Christmas trees and nativities impart negative emotions to non-believers?

Before I found God, I only experienced the secular side of Christmas. I sang songs about Christmas, Jesus and Mary, even though they had no meaning to me.

Why couldn't the message have been more positive, about the celebrations held as part of the Winter Solstice, instead of being an attack ad meant to criticize Christians for feeling and believing what they do? Instead of inviting tolerance for others, all this does is inflame emotions at this important time of year, whether you be Christian or pagan.

I just don't get people sometimes.

  2. So many people seem to get a "they are superior" attitude when it comes to religion - but if they listened to the words they would realize having such an attitude is hypocritical (and very wrong in my opinion).

I guess they just won't "get it" that they are turning people away (or off) with their message. But then, that helps them feel like one of the elite when they do and that makes them, the pathetic, feel better.

  3. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. But what these people are doing is very wrong. Fair enough if they don't believe in what is mentioned in the nativity scenes and stories. But there are plenty of people who do believe, and those people should be allowd to do so.

  5. I believe. I believe in Jesus, and I believe in Santa. And I believe everyone has a right to their own beliefs. If we don't respect each other, what is left? The negativity of the signs piss me off... Thanks for the post.

  6. *shakes head sadly* Well said though Chicago...well said. It really sad that we have that we have to be tolerant and politically correct towards the other religions yet they cant do the same for ours. It's the Golden Rule (referring back to iggy's entry) folks....

  7. If you think about it, this applies to most things in life. More on the Christmas. I have a certain jewish lady that comes into the store and tells all of us that she just doesn't understand why smart intelligent people would put candy in socks, and dance around the Christmas tree. My theory is believe what you like, keep your mouth closed about your beliefs unless asked. I can tolerate most any so called belief, just don't make me feel like I have to defend what I believe.

  8. I just got that poem in my inbox this morning. So I'll be blogging about it later today. My blog, my rules, right???

What I don't understand is how an 85% MAJORITY is forced to bend to a 15% minority.
