"Midway Magic"

Since I don't have a lot more pictures left of my vacation due to the lousy weather the entire second half of my trip, I will post some interesting facts about the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier.

- The USS Midway was in service for 47 years, from the end of WWII to the liberation of Kuwait in 1991

- The USS Midway was the first ship that was too large for the Panama Canal

- It was the first carrier to operate extensively in the sub-Arctic

- Pilots from the Midway shot down the first and last MiGs of the Vietnam War

- Midway led the evacuation of Saigon, rescuing 3,073 refugees in two days

- Rescued 1,800 Americans fleeing the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillipines in 1991

- 225,000 sailors served on the Midway, average age was 20

- No other aircraft carrier has served America as long as the USS Midway

- Surpassed 2.5 million visitors since opening in San Diego in 2004


Here are some additional numbers about USS Midway, that might be interesting:

- It only cost $90 million to build in 1945, but cost $260 million to overhaul it from 1966-1970

- 69,000 tons total weight (average car is about 2 tons)

- 2,000 compartments

- 2,000 electric motors

- 1,500 telephones

- 1,001 feet long (305 metres)

- Set all-time record for days at sea, 327

- 258 feet wide (78.6 metres)

- 260 gallons fuel used per mile (glad my car doesn't get that kind of mileage!)

It's track record of humanitarian missions, establishment of new naval aviation standards, and dedication to the American ideals of liberty, freedom, and peace was unmatched. The called it "Midway Magic."

Day 3: With not a lot planned for today, my sister mentioned that we could go back to where she attended the New Year's Eve party, because they have daily tours. That place was the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, currently docked in San Diego Harbor. I'm not sure if it's permanent, but it's possible, since it's right next to The Maritime Museum along the waterfront.

This was where you paid to get in for the tour. My sister paid and kept the ticket, so I have no idea how much it cost, lol.

Here's the entrance where you go inside to the hangar deck, where they hand out headsets and a hand-held audio player. There are many numbered spots throughout the carrier, you just press the button for that spot and you get a recording of information about it. You can do them out of order, as many as you want, etc. It's suggested, that you should allow 3-1/2 hours if you want to do the full complete tour. There are a total of 60 areas to see on three levels.

This is up on the flight deck. I believe that's the Island Superstructure, and includes Flight Deck Control, radio rooms, Captain's Cabin, and Admiral's Quarters.

Here's a shot looking back from the forward end of the carrier. That's part of the skyline of San Diego behind it. It's kind of hard to see, but I believe that's an F-8 Crusader in the foreground.

Here's a shot of some of the helicopters on deck, once we finished the tour and were down on the ground again. This is from the opposite side of where we entered. I believe the chopper on the left is a Huey Gunship, the white one in the middle is an SH-3 Seaking, and the grey one on the right is an SH-2 Seasprite.

This is what we came around the carrier to see. We could see it clearly from the flight deck, and had to see how tall it actually was up close. You can see me standing in front of his leg, and as I'm almost 5' 5", the statue is over 20 feet high. (25 feet tall to be exact.) For those of you not familiar with this very famous image, it's from the end of WWII, in NY. When the end to WW II was announced, thousands of people ran out to Times Square, and a Life photographer was there recording it. He saw a sailor running around grabbing every girl in sight. As the photographer ran on ahead, he turned around and snapped the picture just as the sailor grabbed a nurse, bent her back, and kissed her. It's one of the most recognized images from WW II. This statue was on loan the city of San Diego. It was previously displayed in New York and Sarasota, FL. It was only in San Diego through 2007 (so how come it was still there on Jan 2, 2008?)

Here's another shot of the statue showing how close to the carrier it is. I don't know what the sign read, I didn't get a chance to read it because my aunt was parked illegally, and we didn't want to dawdle.

My sister also took many pictures of our day on the Midway. Once she sends them to me, I'll post them, she took some cute ones. The whole day was beautiful, about 70F.

Day 2: We didn't do much on New Years Day, except watch football. I missed the Rose Parade completely. I should have taken pictures of my hotel room, it was probably as big as Styx's apartment, lol. And we got a deal on the price because my sister Sue knows someone who knows an employee (or something like that) so we got the rooms for $75 a night instead of at least $120. You enter the room, and there's a kitchen to your left, with a stove and dishwasher and refridgerator. Straight ahead is a couch (with a hide-a-bed) and a desk, and a television set. Just past the kitchen is the bedroom, that has a door for privacy. There's a vanity sink and mirror, another tv, a chair and ottoman, a king sized bed, and a nice big bathroom. Plus a closet, and an ironing board. It's almost more of an extended stay type places. It was called American Inns or something like that.

This is my great-niece Leah. She's six years old and already a drama queen. She started calling me "auntie Denisey neesy neesy" and of course her younger brother picked up on it and started it too. Her mother tried to stop them, but it still would slip out every once in awhile. Note the red hair? It's prevalent in my family, lol.

Here's Bob working his daily Sudoku puzzle, with Sam working his puzzles next to him. Sam is only three, but is VERY into construction. The box of puzzles has 4 puzzles in them, and he knows each one by it's proper name. One is an excavator, and he can actually say the word, lol. Note the red hair? LOL

This is my aunt Val. She's 30 years older than me, and still looks WONDERFUL for her age. For those that know how old I am, you can figure out how old she is, lol.

Side story about my trip that I didn't mention in my Day 1 post. When I got to the airport Monday morning, I was thinking that it was New Year's Eve, the flight wouldn't be full, there'd be plenty of room on the plane, etc. Since I was flying out of Midway, it was quicker than O'Hare, and I was able to use the skycap service to check my bag and avoid the ticket line, which was very long. Since I had my boarding pass, I went straight to security and then to my gate. As I was walking to my gate (only a few gates past security) I noticed there were a lot of people walking around in orange shirts, sweatshirts, hats, jackets, and they all said Illinois on them.

I thought for a second and then realized I'd hit the mother of all plane trips. University of Illinois fans flying to LA for the Rose Bowl football game against USC. I was afraid the flight would be rowdy, certainly knew it would be packed. I think at least half my flight were U of I fans going to the game, many were families with multiple children, all wearing orange and blue, lol. Who knew when I made my flight arrangements back in November that I'd have to deal with this, lol. Fortunately this flight went off without any hitches and I arrived safely and on-time in LA. My aunt certainly knew she was in the right area when she saw all the Illinois shirts of people coming down to baggage claim, lol.

Day 1 in California, New Year's Eve. My sister, Sue, and her husband, Bob, were headed out to a party on the USS Midway aircraft carrier. They left my aunt Val, my niece Tina, her two kids, and me, all alone.

We drank some wine, we watched t.v., we played dominoes and hearts, and at about 12:15 AM, my aunt and I left to go to our hotel. It was a nice quiet way to spend New Year's Eve.

I'm home from sunny (and not so sunny) southern California. I have a cold, to go with all the rain we're getting right now. I'm pretty sure I got it from my aunt, but there's some disagreement between us where she got her cold from. It didn't stop us from enjoying our time together. I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked, due to the inclement weather, but I'll transfer what I do have and give you all the exciting details of my week, hopefully tomorrow.

I'm off to sunny southern California! My flight leaves at 8:40 AM tomorrow. I'm parking at the airport, in the long-term parking, so I'll want to get there by 7AM. Hopefully, traffic will be light, with most people off work for the holiday. I'm also hoping not a lot of people will actually be flying on New Year's Eve, lol.

Most of my stuff is packed. I have one pair of jeans to pack (waiting for them to finish drying), and a few items I'll need tonight and in the morning. Everything else is packed, I think. I sure hope I haven't forgotten anything. I'm taking my camera, so I can get pictures of my family. Some of them I haven't seen in several years, so pictures are warranted. And I don't know how many more years we'll have with my great-nephew Aaron who has Muscular Dystrophy.

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year, stays safe, and most importantly, spends it with family or friends. They are the most important things we have, beyond anything else. For those of you that have had rough times in 2007, may 2008 be full of prosperity and happiness. For those that had a good 2007, may 2008 be even better and enriched by love from those around you.

I hope everyone who's putting up a tree has theirs up. This picture is one from November 18, 4 days before Thanksgiving in the U.S. Someone had actually bought their Christmas tree THAT early. I wonder how long it lasted before all the needles fell off? LOL

It's been a quiet weekend. I am in the middle of my Christmas cards, I have them all signed, I have them all addressed, I have stamps on most of them but need to buy more stamps tomorrow. I now need to decide who will also get my "letter." For the friends and relatives that I don't talk to often, I put in a letter that I type up, so they know what I've been up to this past year and will be up to early next year. Once Survivor is over with, I'll sort through the cards and decide who gets a letter this year, lol.

I'm also working on laundry tonight. One load is done, another is in the dryer, and a third is in the washer. The dryer shut off, so at the next commercial I need to take that out and move the load over from the washer.

I can't believe we have one more week until Christmas. Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday it was Thanksgiving. I still have all my presents to wrap, I'm even still waiting for some to be delivered that I ordered. Some presents that haven't arrived are ones I need to send, but the recipient has been advised the package will be late, same as last year. I think I need to start shopping for her in October, lmao.

Well, still no pictures to be loaded, so I guess I'll end it here, since it's a commercial and I can go move laundry.

Ahhh, parties. Everyone loves parties, don't they? Well, usually they do, if they can remember them. Friday night was my Christmas party for work, oh sorry "Holiday party." I did not attend last year's party, because 1) It was too far away, 2) If I did go, I'd not be able to drink because I had to drive myself home, and 3) I was bored stiff the previous year, why put myself through that again. This year, however, I had some incentive to go.

The party was to be held at the Embassy Suites a couple blocks down the road from our office. My company offered to reimburse anyone wanting to book at room at the hotel, or they would cover cab fare home. Their reason for this was to keep a bunch of drunks off the road. They also decided to have a DJ this year, with dancing, and they were giving away ruffle prizes. Naturally, with everything they offered, I decided to attend the party and stay at the hotel afterwards, allowing me to get drunk if I chose to do so.

Those attending the party were allowed to leave work at 3:00 PM, to allow time to go home or wherever before cocktails started at 6:00 PM. I decided to drive to a KMart store nearby, looking for shoes. I don't like heels, and the black flats I've had for years were looking pretty ratty. I thought I might be able to find a relatively cheap pair at KMart. Unfortunately, the only ones they had were wide widths, which I don't need. So I left KMart empty-handed, heading back by our office building to the hotel to relax a bit before getting ready for the party.

The Embassy Suites is one of three hotels crammed next to each other with very little in between. There's a parking garage behind them, which they all share. Part of the parking garage is also general parking for the Convention Center that's across the street. The signs are not real clear (or at least not to me) regarding where to park for the Embassy Suites. I circled three times, and finally saw a co-worker that was on the party committee, so I asked her where to park. She directed me to the one section where the sign says $18, but that the hotel would pay for the parking. I turned around, for the third time, and went to park. There are signs all throughout the garage, indicating which spots are for which hotel, so I had to keep my eye open for open spots for Embassy Suites guests. I made my way to the second level and found a spot near the elevator and stairs.

I pushed the down button, waited, pushed it again, no light, pushed it again, gave up and decided to walk down the one flight of stairs. I checked into the hotel, they marked my parking stub as paid, and I went up to my room on the 5th floor. It was a suite, with a couch, a chair, two television sets, a king sized bed and of course a bathroom. I wandered around a bit, to see what was where, then at 5:00 PM I started getting ready for the party.

Just after 6:00 PM I made my way downstairs to the salon where our party was being held. I was one of the first few people there. I think maybe six people were there when I walked in. I spoke with a few, then made my way to the bar for a glass of wine. Slowly more people started showing up, I met the spouses of our salesmen, it was nice meeting these women that they talk about.

About 7:00 PM our president gave a brief speech, then we were allowed to go up to the buffet for dinner. Our choices were: Chicken breast, roast beef, and salmon, mashed potatoes (the lumpy kind made from real potatoes), salad, some vegetable that I don't remember, buns, some type of chowder soup and dessert. I was seated at a table with my boss, John, my co-worker Karen and her husband, Katie from our international dept and her husband, and my co-worker Mike and his wife. We had two empty seats, and there were two men sitting at the table next to us all alone, so I got up, walked over to them, and invited them to sit at our table. Their names were Tim, a salesman from our Detroit office, and Doug, a newer salesman who lives in Maryland and attended without his wife. By this time, I was working on my second glass of wine.

After dinner was over, the 10 year awards were handed out to a couple salesmen, I believe they get a whopping $250. Then they did the ruffle. Ever since the email first came out with the details of the party, we've been laughing over the ruffle. You see, all the members of the committee were foreigners to the US. Three were Japanese, and the other two were from South America. The person who sent out the email mistyped the word "raffle" and instead called it a "ruffle." So we were calling it a ruffle all week and all night, and correcting anyone who accidentally called it a raffle. During the ruffle, I got my third glass of wine. Naturally, I didn't win anything. However, every single member of the committee won something, lmao. Two other people at my table won something, but not me. I never win anything.

Next, the DJ started playing music and we were treated to a tango performance. I'm no expert, but in my opinion, they weren't very good. I won't try to go into details here, but I was less than impressed. After a few dances, they offered to give a lesson if anyone was interested. The response was less than enthusiastic. No one was interested. Even after I had been drinking, you couldn't get me up on the dance floor in front of all those people to try to tango!

With that out of the way, the last organized activity of the evening was a game of bingo to give away the last few prizes. Needless to say, I didn't win anything then either. It was quite comical, the person reading the letters/numbers off, was only saying the numbers, not the letters, and there were a couple people who decided they HAD to have the letters said too, since everyone knows the numbers can be duplicated in more than one column! Actually, it was more to help us understand him. The man reading the numbers was Japanese, and some of his numbers could have been letters. For example, when he said 55, did he say 55, or did he say B5? We couldn't tell. So then we sat there while he went back through the first 8 numbers giving us the letters too. Talk about confusion!

With that finally over with, it was time to do some dancing. I was talking with people, I don't really remember who; I was drinking, a couple more glasses of wine; And I was watching people dance. Then the DJ played The Electric Slide. That is one dance, I can't refuse to dance to. I HAVE to get up and dance to it. And I must say, I did quite well for being quite buzzed at the time. When that was all done with, I sat down and rested, talked some more, drank some more, then the party broke up at midnight. There were about five of us that decided to have a nightcap in the bar. One of them bought us margaritas, and we almost literally bumped into Doug there. I sat at a table with him, while the others sat at the table next to us, and the rest of might night is a blur or blank.

I remember talking to Doug, but I don't remember what I talked about. I remember us leaving, and the bartender telling me I could take my margarita to my room if I wanted, which I politely declined. But I don't remember anything after that until I woke up in my room at 7:00 AM. I don't remember getting into the elevator, I don't remember finding my room, I don't remember getting undressed, none of it. Despite being wasted, I was aware of certain things. Like the fact that I was wearing a ring on my finger, I removed it. I was wearing a pear necklace, I removed that too. I was wearing a pin on my blouse, I removed that as well before getting undressed. I found them neatly laying on the vanity by the bed. I was wearing my nightshirt, which I had put on the bed when I had unpacked everything earlier. But I wasn't all the way under the covers. I apparently crawled under the bedspread, but not under the sheet and blanket.

When I woke up at 7:00 AM with a hangover from hell (I needed some hair of the dog that bit me), I set the alarm clock for 10:00 AM so I could get up and get dressed and out of there before the noon checkout. I woke later at 10:00 AM, but not to the alarm. Good thing too, because I realized that although I set the alarm correctly, the clock itself was off by 12 hours. I very easily could have missed checkout, lol.

The other thing about my stay was the temperature control in my room. Each room has an individual thermostat to control the temperature. When I first checked in, I adjusted the thermostat down to 68, because I didn't want the room to be too warm later when I came back up to crash after the party. When I woke up at 10:00 AM to get dressed, I noticed it was very warm in the room. The thermostat said the room temperature was at least 74. My adjusting it down to 68 did nothing. So I turned the heat off. By the time I walked out at 11:00 AM to check out (and get something to drink so I could swallow a couple Advil) it was still 74 in that room. There were no windows to open, and I couldn't very well open the room door while I was showering and getting dressed. The heat was doing nothing for my hangover, it was nearly making me sick to my stomach.

I took the elevator down one floor to get to a pop machine, downed half a bottle of Pepsi in one gulp, along with a couple Advil, then staggered back to the elevator to go to the lobby to check out. I met a couple salesmen and their wives there, waiting for the car to pick them up so they could go to the airport. I told them my story of getting to my room last night, and we had a nice chuckle over it. My drive home was only 30 minutes or so, nice drive when there's no traffic. It took me several hours before I was feeling better, although food did help a bit.

I think I can safely say, I won't want any wine until new years, when I'm in CA. And only in moderation!!!!

Quick post tonight, I need to get to bed, since I'll have an early start tomorrow. We're supposed to have more freezing rain tonight, which will make for a bad commute to work in the morning.

My Christmas party was Friday night. I was SOOOO drunk!!!!! Hopefully, tomorrow night, I'll have a few minutes to tell you what I remember, lmao.

Big "Thank You" to Lainie for sending me her snow. It started snowing lightly around 3:30pm today. By 6:00pm they were BIG FAT flakes everywhere! I was able to get home tonight before it started sticking to the roads, thankfully. I have a nice close parking space too, since they're "first come first serve."

I was chatting with Styx on msn after Kerry went to bed, and knew I would have to get up early for work, because of the snow. So after signing off with her about, oh 10pm I think, I went into the other room and decided before I go to bed, I really should go outside and see how much snow we have, see if it's still snowing, and maybe brush off what has already accumulated on my car. That will make it that much easier tomorrow morning when I'm leaving for work.

My car was completely covered. I would say we have at LEAST 4 inches of snow, thank you very much Lainie! LMAO. It's STILL snowing...at least the flakes are smaller now, lol. It's started as a very light snow earlier, but now it's a wet packing kind of snow, perfect for snowballs. But it's STILL snowing! When I brush my car off, I have a sort of pattern I try to follow, lol. (imagine that) I start on the roof, brushing snow back and forth off each side to clear the entire roof, then I do the driver side window, then I move to the rear window and trunk area, then to the windshield, then around to the passenger side windows, and finally the hood and front lights/grill area. Well, when I was coming around to the front of the car from the passenger side, I had to step up on the curb, and with the snow, I couldn't see where the edge of the curb was, so after I'd stepped up on it and then was stepping closer to the car to brush it off, my left foot slipped off the curb, and I sat on my ass in the snow, lmao. Good thing it isn't frigid cold outside.

I wonder how much more snow I'll have by morning? My car was already showing a new dusting of snow where I'd cleaned it, as I was walking back inside. My gloves are in the dryer, drying since one was engulfed in snow when I sat down. Now it's time for me to go bury myself in blankets in bed and sleep the night away, dreaming of palm trees and 75F temperatures.

Yes, I'm alive. The weather was supposed to be a rain and snow mix this afternoon, so I decided not to go see my aunt. Turns out all we got was rain, and now wind. Oh well. Tomorrow is supposed to be all of 29F, when the normal high is around 42F, lol.

Tonight I watched The Amazing Race. I still haven't figured out which team I'm rooting for, but I know which ones I'm not rooting for, lol. Then at 8pm I watched the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. I love when those come on, they always make me cry, and I love seeing all the Hallmark commercials. They actually had a couple new ones this year, which was nice. I was hoping for some new ones, since I've seen all the others many times. Tonight's movie was called Pictures of Hollis Woods, about a little orphan girl who finds a family to call her own. It stared Sissy Spacek as a woman with Alzheimers. It was scary to see her portrayal of it, since my uncle suffers from it, and I know there will come a time when my aunt won't be able to take care of him anymore.

Well, I'm off to figure out what I'm wearing for work tomorrow, then going to bed. Have a great week everyone.

The following story will probably have you laughing hysterically. If you have a weak bladder, or are prone to peeing your pants, I strongly urge you to go to the bathroom BEFORE reading any further.

The experts say it takes a couple of hours once you fall asleep to reach R.E.M. sleep, the place where you dream. I say, it's not true for everyone. It's especially not true for me. I am able to fall into a deep sleep very quickly, especially in the morning when I don't want to get out of bed and go to work. This morning was a perfect example of that.

My alarm is set to go off at 5:30AM. My snooze button on my alarm clock is set for 9 minute intervals. After 54 minutes (6 snooze cycles for those of you weak in math), it no longer goes off. So I know that by 6:24 I MUST get up, or my alarm will not go off again and I will be severely late for work. Last night I was up too late, reading emails, reading a book that's taking me longer to read than I had thought when I checked it out from the library, and generally just not going to bed at a decent time. That led me to REALLY not wanting to get out of bed this morning.

After hitting snooze six times, and looking at the clock at 6:24, knowing I needed to get up, I closed my eyes and went directly back to sleep. A sleep so deep I started dreaming. The experts also say your dreams only last a few seconds, even though in the dream it feels like a long time. I'm no expert, so I have no idea how long before I started dreaming, but I know that I was dreaming when I suddenly awoke at 7:02. (Last chance to empty your bladder.)

I was driving a car down a residential street, with a couple cars parked in the street on each side, leaving just enough room for one car at a time to drive down parts of the street. Ahead of me, a car turned onto the street and pulled over to let me by, so it could then proceed down the direction I had just come. The weather was clear, although I have no idea if it was sunny, just that it wasn't raining or snowing or dark out. I came to an intersection where I could turn either left or right. I started to turn left, as that was the direction I needed to go, when suddenly, there was 6 to 8 inches of snow on the street which had not been plowed, and cars had been driving through it leaving only tire tracks. Believe it or not, that wasn't even what startled me the most. Ahead of me, blocking the road that I needed to go down, was a chain-link fence with a closed gate. I stopped, which upon retrospect, surprises me that I didn't slide around, as suddenly as I would have stopped had I seen something like that in real life. I was going to turn around, and as I glanced in my rear view mirror, I noticed the road behind me (if I had turned right instead) was also blocked by a chain link fence and gate. I thought to myself that I should just turn around and find another way.

As I started to turn around, a pickup truck pulled up next to me, with a woman driving it. On top of the pickup truck was one of those camper cab things, most of you know what I'm talking about, lol. Anyway, somehow...in that camper part, in the front, the part that sits on top of the cab of the truck, was a man, with a window looking out. So he was directly above the woman driving the pickup. I never saw the woman's face, but the man looked over at me and motioned that they were going to bust through the gate. As they passed me by, and I considered their sanity, I glanced back down the road I had turned off of, and would you believe there was now a fence and gate across that road too. So unless this pickup truck did what he said they were going to do, I was now stuck in this one block section with no way out.

I watched as the pickup truck rammed the gate and busted it wide open. I followed them through, and as soon as I was through the gate, the snow was gone, it was a perfectly clear day again. At this point, the road split in three, straight ahead, to the left, or to the right. I needed to go straight, through the town (small town that it was), to get to my destination which apparently was a customer's of mine. Next I hear a CB radio, which magically appeared in my car, and I heard the man from the pickup say he was going to try to find out why they closed the gates. Not 30 seconds later, he says over the CB, "I found it, there's a beam in the road here. I'll stay here and make sure no one runs into it until it can be moved." A steel beam. I guess the fences and gates were supposed to be used if they ever needed to isolate any part of the town to protect the people and prevent injuries, etc. I continued my drive down the main road through town.

Next thing I know, I'm not in my car anymore, I'm on a bicycle. And I'm not going through this town, I'm riding the bike through a shopping mall. I turn into a jewelry store, circle it, come right back out and stop, confused. I think to myself, because somehow I know I've biked through this mall before, that there must be a way out, but I'm at a dead end.

Then I woke up, saw it was 7:02, and got my butt in gear to get to work, albeit a little later than usual, lol.

Raise your hand if you peed your pants laughing while reading that.

Well, I'm definitely feeling better. My nose is clearing up, I'm not coughing that much, and I think I only sneezed twice today, lol.

I did some online shopping today. I am usually really behind on buying things that need to be sent out by mail, so I figured if I didn't get anything bought today, I'd never have it in time. I got a couple things for Kerry. There is one more really nice thing I want to get for her, but I wouldn't have it in time for Christmas. So maybe I'll hold off and get it for her for another special occasion. I got a t-shirt for my half sister (the one with the house in Hawaii), that says "I'm on Island time." I got a left-handers desk calendar for my aunt, because...well...she's left-handed! I also got her a large print crossword puzzle book, she loves crossword puzzles, and as she's gotten older (30 years older than me), she's found the large print are easier to read. Who knew! I wanted to get something for my friend Deb, but when I went to order it, they didn't have it in stock. Bummer! Now I have to look for something else! I also wanted to buy the sweatshirt I promised for FD, cause she sent me some music, but I didn't know what size she wants, so I'm waiting on an email back from her. Speaking of, for the hell of it, I just checked my email, and she replied. So now I can order that before going to bed.

What I'm thinking I might do, is take the presents for my aunt and sister with me to California and they'll have a sort of belated Christmas. I'll just tell my aunt to keep out a roll of Christmas paper, because it's always suggested that if you're taking presents on a plane with you, don't wrap them, because security may want them unwrapped? Better to be safe than sorry, right?

No cd's to buy this week, thank goodness! I needed to save my money up for Christmas shopping! LOL

I didn't go to work today. I really expected I would, but when my alarm went off at 5:30, and I hit snooze for an hour, then slept for another hour, I knew I'd never have the energy to go to work today. I called my boss' voice mail, got a message that he wouldn't be in today, so I called a co-worker's phone and left a message for her that I wouldn't be in. I called her in the afternoon, wanting to check and see if something was taken care of on Wednesday when I was out. Turns out it was, so nothing needed to be done today. I'm feeling much better; not sneezing constantly, and my nose isn't running. It's still stuffy, but I can breathe somewhat normally through it. I'm just glad to get this out of the way now so I'm not sick over the holidays or my trip to CA over New Years.

Yay! I got pictures into blogger!!! Here are pictures from the full moon a month ago. I tried using a slower shutter speed, but with nothing to set the camera on, my hands wiggled and they came out blurry. Maybe it adds a little something to them, instead of being just plain boring moon pics, lol.

Ok, my post below really sucks, but I was fighting with the html code and it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. I finally got it to at least separate my paragraphs, but the sentences are still too smushed together. Read at your own risk!

I GIVE UP!!!

For months, blogger has been having photo upload problems. Who knew!!! I have found out how bad it is in the last couple weeks. Most times, when trying to upload a photo to blogger, I get an error message, or tonight, there's just no picture; A white square and a red X. This has been going on for MONTHS, and they are still "working on a long term fix."

Well, since this doesn't seem to work with any regularity, and any photos that do get posted should be considered miracles, you won't be seeing any photos on my blog. I have tried about 6 times tonight to load photos, with no results. Therefore, I am back to boring text-only blogs until someone can tell me that blogger has really fixed this problem.

Since Thanksgiving is this week, in the United States, I am taking the day off tomorrow to get some Christmas shopping done. It's been a tradition for many years. I used to do almost all my shopping on that day, the day before Thanksgiving. But a few years ago, it was pared down to just "sock presents" and anything else I might come across.

For those that don't know, I celebrate Christmas with my "aunt," who's of no relation to me. She is the aunt of my late best friend who passed away almost 10 years ago. After my parents passed away, her family "adopted" me and I began celebrating most holidays with them, as if I were a member of the family. I even call her Ant, a butchered but long-time mis-spelling of aunt that is a tradition with the family.

We all pitch in and buy sock presents, because we are all children at heart, and what is Christmas without socks/stockings? Each item for the socks gets wrapped in Sunday color comics newspaper, which makes it fun trying to figure out what everything is while still wrapped. Most years at least one person goes overboard and buys WAY too many sock presents. Can't leave any for next year, NO! Must give them all this year. So the socks are stuffed until they almost burst at the seams, and the leftovers are put into plastic grocery bags that are used to prop up the socks until Christmas morning.

Why am I telling you all this? No idea! I started talking about going shopping tomorrow, and instead of talking about Thanksgiving, I immediately flipped to Christmas! So, back to Thanksgiving talk...my aunt, who's not really my aunt, LOVES turkey dinners, she loves cooking it, she loves eating it, it's one of her favorite meals in the whole world. She loves it so much, she typically keeps at leat three turkeys in her freezer at all times. We also have turkey dinners, full turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, the whole spiel, twice a year. Once on Thanksgiving and once in the Spring.

Since I'll be with her tomorrow to do some of that Christmas shopping mentioned above, I'm planning on staying there overnight, so I don't have to use more gas to come home, then turn right around the next morning and go right back out there. It will save me 60 miles worth of gas. I still have to figure what I'm going to wear tomorrow and get everything packed. I know what I'm wearing on Thursday...my Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt. I wear it every year, because the other tradition on Thanksgiving, other than turkey and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, is FOOTBALL! And Dallas ALWAYS plays on Thanksgiving. Dinner is planned for about 1-2 PM, so we can eat and I can get all the dishes done, or most of them at least, before the game starts, I think about 4:15pM local time. I'm not even sure who they're playing, lol. The game won't be over with until about 7:30, so I'll drive home after that, probably with some leftover turkey. That's about all I let her give to me. The rest I just won't eat. But turkey...that's easily nuked and I can nibble on it all night, lol.

And once Thanksgiving is over, I might consider changing up the colors of my blog to reflect the next holiday on the Calendar, Hannukah! Just kidding. I might change the colors to be more festive for Christmas, or I might look for some background to use. Not sure yet. Don't be too surprised if you see a change one of these days soon.

I'm feeling better today. My legs are still a little sore, but my knee isn't bothering me at all. I know, I know...I need to call the doc to have it looked at. Maybe tomorrow, lmao

I stopped at Target on the way home to pick up some new cd's. I got Silverchair (aussie band maree told me about), Alicia Keys new cd As I Am, Trisha Yearwoods new cd Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love, and George Strait, 22 More Hits, the companion to his 50 Number Ones, includes his new song How 'Bout Them Cowgirls.

Going to be strange only streaming for two hours on Friday nights, lol. Will take a couple weeks to get used to AK streaming between sweetie and myself. But, I believe she's a good addition to The Wolven stream team. I can't wait to hear her stream, it's been a while since I've heard anything but NTT from her, lol.

Well, I was going to post a picture or two tonight, but blogger isn't cooperating. I had a very busy Sunday. I went to my aunt's house to help her paint her dining room and hallway leading to her garage. Since they were last painted a few years ago, her son moved in, moved out, and moved back in again, creating many marks along some of the walls. She got tired of looking at them, and wanted her place to be done before Thanksgiving, so Sunday was P-Day (Painting Day).

I arrived about 9:30am, she fed me breakfast (gooey eggs, sausage, an english muffin and juice), then we got to work. We still had to take her pictures down, move plants and stuff away from one wall by her sliding glass doors, and tape around every doorway. Most of the moving and taping was my job, lol. She did some of the baseboard taping and started edging that part, while I started doing the edging by the ceiling. Then she followed behind me and did the rolling. We work well together, have painted several times together.

We finished about 3:30, sat and rested for a few minutes, then had our late lunch/early dinner of pot roast, carrots and potatoes. We still had to remove all the tape, and put everything back before collapsing exhaausted. I finally left for home about 6:15, and just made it home in time for The Amazing Race.

I woke up this morning, and boy howdy did my legs hurt! I hobbled around all day, my body definitely didn't like all the trips up and down the ladder, and getting up and down onto the floor, lol. But her condo looks MUCH better now. I'm going to go take another couple of Aleve before I head to bed. Hopefully, I'll feel better tomorrow. Oh! That reminds me...I need to pick up some Aleve for Kerry!

The reason I haven't just moved into the 2nd bedroom is because the first bedroom, or master bedroom, has a huge walk in closet. It's so much of a walk in closet, you walk THROUGH it to get to the bathroom! How can I give that up? And...my bedroom furniture, both dresser and bureau have clothes in them. I need those too. There's no room here in the second bedroom for those. And by the time I tried to bring all that into the 2nd bedroom, I could have just switched beds. Much easier! The only thing holding me up now is time, energy, and gumption. When I have one, I don't have the other two, lmao.

Here's a tree that has turned yellow, and started losing it's leaves. Behind it you can see one tree that is red, one that is bare, and a few others that are still green. What a strange autumn we're having.

Here's the tree looking out off my balcony that has turned a beautiful red. It was one of the first trees in back of my building to change, and still seemed like it took longer for it to change this year. I've seen so many variations in coloring this autumn. I've seen bare trees, trees half bare, trees fully colored, trees still changing, and some still green like it's August. I've heard rumors that it's partly due to the lack of rain this fall. Or maybe the warmer temperatures had something to do with it. October sure seemed warmer than usual. I've had maybe four days so far where I've had to scrape frost off my windshield before going to work. Today was the first day below freezing when I went to work.

I stopped and bought two cd's on the way home from work tonight. New cd by Little Big Town, and a new cd by Chris Botti. The Chris Botti is actually for my aunt for Christmas. I had told her about the cd a couple weeks ago, she said she would go buy it. Well, she forgot. So I mentioned it to her a few days ago, she went to Target and couldn't find it. Since I was there tonight, and it was only 11.98, I figured I'd buy it, rip it to my computer, then wrap it for her for Christmas, lmao. Then I told her that on the phone tonight, and she was cool with it. We do stuff like that all the time.

Ok, going to go rip these cd's and finish watching the CMA's.

Here's the second bedroom, where my computer is. It's on the right, just off the edge of the picture. That's the new comforter, part of the bed-in-a-bag I bought when I was planning on moving that bed into my bedroom. Alas, I haven't done that yet, and now I'm not sure when the mood will strike me to tear up both bedrooms to do it.

Here's my bedroom. Or at least part of it. You can see my little itty bitty bed. Yup, that's where I sleep every night. There was never a need or a reason for me to get a bigger bed, when I was the only one sleeping in it. Pretty sad indicator of my life, eh?

I'm trying to do this post while the football game is on. Fortunately, the Cowboys are beating the Eagles 28-7 in the 3rd quarter.

I went to see my aunt today. I vaccumed all her floors and she went behind me and mopped them. Then we went out to lunch to Portillo's, a Chicago based hot dog restaurant. I always get a chili dog, no onions, cheese fries and a soda. Yummy!!! (Score is now 35-10, Eagles will have do something miraculous to come back at this point.) AND........I finally got my Bo Bice cd!!! I had my aunt get it when she went to Wal Mart almost 2 weeks ago, but I haven't seen her since, so I finally have it, and can listen to it! Wooooooooo Hoooooooooooooo

After lunch, we went for a Sunday drive. We went to the other side of town to drive past my sister's house (long story). Her eldest daughter was on the front stoop talking to a couple friends, so at least I know they still live there. After that, we drove to another small town on the way back to my aunt's house, and I got to see where her ex-husband is now living. A new grouping of townhomes, very nice area. Then we stopped at a store in Sycamore because they have Diet Coke on sale, 4-12 packs for $10, I got 4 Diet Cherry Coke, mmmmm.

Before starting this post, I looked to see if I have any more pictures to show you, but the only ones left are cloud pictures that I wanted to show in order, so I need to load the first ones on my computer first, or they were pictures of my apartment, but I recall everyone was satisfied with what I showed them already, so I guess you'll have to wait for the cloud pictures.

Back to work tomorrow, so as soon as football is done, I'm off to bed. Have a great week!

While I was packing for my trip to Michigan, we had a storm roll in. It ended up missing us (but caused tornadoes in Lansing, MI), but it provided some awesome cloud formations! There are a few more that took with my film camera that I just picked up a couple days ago. As soon as I can get them on my computer, I'll show you the rest.

Here's a picture, kind of boring though, of some of the leaves beginning to change outside my apartment. There's a tree that has turned a beautiful red that I've taken a picture of. I'll try to get another picture this weekend, if the leaves haven't fallen off yet and the sun is shining. It's interesting to see how different trees change. We have some bare trees, some trees that are half bare, some that are very colorful but haven't lost leaves yet, and some that haven't even changed colors yet. The other thing I've noticed this fall...the beautiful sunsets. I don't remember the last time I've seen so many beautiful sunsets with clouds showing different colors as the sun goes below the horizon.

On OCTOBER 19, my aunt and I went back to Michigan for a long weekend, to visit an old chat friend. The timing was perfect, as the leaves were at their most colorful. Below is a picture I snapped outside an apple orchard. It's just on the outside of Manchester. They had pumpkins, apples (bagged and taffy), donuts, and cider. Many apple orchards offer home-made apples, although I've never learned why. These were AWESOME!

On the way into Manchester, right on the edge of town, there's a yard with a tree, that took what must have been left of a branch and maybe carved an arm and fist into the wood. It's also been painted. This was the best picture I was able to get, Monday morning as we were leaving town. In the fall and winter, the sun isn't at a very good angle to get a nice picture of it. By afternoon, the arm is completely shaded, and a good picture, even with flash, is impossible. It's just something we always look for (along with a llama farm) as we head South on M-52 into Manchester.

We had a very nice visit. We did try to get together with Deb while we were in Michigan, but unfortunately it didn't work out. We've decided that next time we go to Michigan, we will go a day earlier, so we have a whole day to spend with Deb. And perhaps in the Spring, I'll take a day and go visit Deb myself (and maybe meet Kerry there????)

I'll be picking up some pictures I was getting developed (to use up the film I started in August), so I can scan those pictures soon and get some posted in the near future.

Here's a picture I took a couple days ago of the sunset by my apartment. The clouds weren't really that red, they were more pink or mauve. But this is what I got using my digital camera. Pretty cool, huh??

I'm home from my long weekend in Michigan. I had a nice time visiting my friend, but was disappointed in not being able to see another friend. Things just didn't work out like I'd hoped, and I'm not sure what the future will bring.

The colors were beautiful the whole way there, we were told the fall colors are at their peak about now in Michigan, so our timing was perfect. I didn't get the opportunity to get many pictures, we just never seemed to be in a good spot to stop and have me get out to snap a picture. I got one picture while we were at an apple orchard getting cider, apples, donuts, and taffy apples. I'll post that as soon as I get a chance to load the pictures from my camera to my computer.

Right now my knee and back are killing me. I don't know what I did to my back, although it could have been the storage cabinet that I had to push up a flight of stairs on Saturday. Although, my back wasn't bothering me yesterday, only today. My knee though, has been coming on all weekend, the more I went up and down those damn stairs the more it bothered me. I took a couple Aleve earlier, but unless I go elevate it, it won't feel any better. I'll do that when I go watch Journeyman in an hour.

I had a nice weekend, but I'm glad to be home.

Another quiet weekend here. I got caught up on all my tv shows this weekend, and watched two disappointing football games. Oh well. This Friday I will be making another trip to Michigan, to visit a couple friends.

The leaves are finaly starting to turn. Some trees have already changed and the branches are now bare, others are just barely starting to show color. Using the film in my camera that I originaly loaded the end of August for the eclipse, I'm attempting to take several photos over a period of may be a few weeks to show the slow color change here. I think I only have about 4 pictures left on the roll of film, so anything I want to take after that's done will be using my digital camera.

Time to go check the weather for tomorrow so I know how warm I need to dress for work. Have a great week!

So much for trying to support a sports team. Every time I do, they lose. I tried to suppor the Cubs, they were swept in the Divisional Series against Arizona. I tried to support the Cowboys, they are being humiliated by a 1-3 Buffalo team. So I'm back to neutral colors, supporting no team. I give up.

It's late on a Sunday night, I've been watching football all evening, we've had summer-like temperatures all weekend, and I have to work tomorrow, lol.

The Bears just went ahead for the first time, with 2 minutes left. GO BEARS! Tomorrow night is the Cowboys game against Buffalo, so I will be watching that for sure! Another late night for me, lol.

Today, after Kerry's stream, I went out to see my aunt. I haven't seen her for at least a month, as she was sick for a few weeks, and then did too much last Saturday and needed to rest on Sunday. I try to go see her every Sunday, helping her clean her floors (I vaccum, she mops) doing anything else around her condo her son hasn't done, she feeds me, and we go see a movie. Today was no different. We did the floors, ate lunch, went to see The Seeker, I helped her clean her sliding glass doors, I attempted to hook up her new dvd recorder, and I brought in her garden hose for the winter. The only thing I didn't get done was to clean her spare bathtub. She has arthritis in both shoulders, can't bend over to clean the bathtub, and her son won't ever do it. So I do what I can to help.

And the Bears just won the game, intercepting the ball in the endzone as time expires. Wooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooo

Well, game 1 didn't go as I'd hoped. Cubs lose 3-1. Without reading any articles or watching any post game interviews, I have a few thoughts on the game. Those not interested in baseball can just skip today's post, lol.

1. Carlos Zambrano pitched a GREAT game. He only allowed one run in 6 innings.

2. Since Carlos was pitching well, why bring him out? Confidence in the relievers? Concern for his arm since he'll be pitching again on only 3 days rest?

3. Why is Lou Piniella only going with three starting pitchers for this series? Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill, and Ted Lilly. It sure puts a lot of pressure on the middle and late relievers to be perfect.

4. All the Cubs, with the exception of Carlos, looked flat last night. Ramirez almost looks like he's not trying when he's at the plate. He's reaching for pitches that he would not normally bother with. Derrick Lee looks like his back is still bothering him. Every time he's at the plate, he's arching back like he's trying to stretch it out. That HAS to be affecting his swing. Soriano, who is typically a first pitch batter, is still being bothered by his sore quad. That affects not just his fielding, but his base running too. In the 6th inning, the Cubs had the bases loaded...THE BASES LOADED, only got ONE run in, and left 3 men on base. They have to be better at advancing the base runners or they'll have no chance tonight or Saturday when they come back to Chicago for game 3.

5. Carlos Marmol pitched the 7th inning in relief of Carlos Zambrano. Marmol had been great, not allowing a run in the last 28 innings he's pitched. What does he do? Gives up two runs to give the D'backs the lead for good.

I really was hoping for more from the Cubs last night. Hopefully they got whatever was bugging them last night out of their system and can come back tonight to tie the series at 1 each.

Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The game starts at 9pm CDT, so I will be bleary-eyed tomorrow morning. Carlos "Big Z" Zambrano is pitching for the Cubs tonight, he's pitched better away from home all season, so hopefully he'll continue that trend and give the Cubs a chance to go up 1-0.

I know all you hockey fans and red sox fans and basically non-sports fans could care less about the Cubs, but StygianMuse and I LOVE the Cubs and we'll support them until they win the World Series. And just so everyone knows, it's been 99 years since the Cubs last won the World Series. 99 YEARS!!!

Oh good, since you liked the pictures I posted of my apartment, now I don't have to post any of the other pictures of my apartment that I took. Not in the mood to post anyway, didn't have a good day at work, not in the mood to talk to anyone tonight.

Wow, 12 days since my last post. Sorry for the lack of activity here, but I just haven't felt like posting much, not a lot has been happening. I've had new pictures to load that I took just over a week ago, but never felt like moving them from my camera until now.

My half sister and her husband were passing through Chicago last Friday, so they took me out to dinner, and I got the chance to show them my apartment. Of course, that meant getting all my "fall" cleaning done to make the place presentable, lol. Once it was clean, I took pictures of my apartment. Although it was the middle of the afternoon, because of how my apartment is situated, I don't get a lot of direct sunlight. Therefore, after moving the pictures to my computer, I had to lighten some of them up. I don't even remember if I used the flash or not, I'm sure I probably would have, but who knows or remembers at this point.

So, to get everything started, here's what you see when you walk into my apartment starting out looking straight and turning to the right:

Here are the two pictures I took this afternoon of the Rosemont Water Tower about a block away from my building. I can stand at our windows and look out on it. These pictures were taken from the top of the parking garage behind our building, so I could get an unobstructed view of the tower. You can also go to this link to see the article on the Chicago CBS website about the water tower being named "Tank of the Year."

I was right, I did have a couple pictures that I hadn't posted yet. These next two pictures are the view from my balcony. If the sun is shining enough tomorrow, I'll try to go outside at lunch and get a better picture of the water tower. It's actually painted quite nicely.





It's been quiet here the last couple weeks. Just working and watching football on Saturdays (college) and Sundays (pro), baseball at night (GO CUBS!!!) As I type this, they just tied the score in the bottom of the 9th.

I signed a new lease for this apartment, so I'll be here for another year. I jokingly asked the customer relations gal, Dawn, what their policy was on murder...if they would terminate my lease if I were to murder my upstairs neighbors. I think for just a second, she thought I was serious, lmao. If they don't stop doing laundry and vacuuming at midnight on Sunday nights, I might just threaten them with bodily harm.

Playing Ketchup!

Ok, so maybe that should have said "catch up," but do any of you really mind? I had to open another window to see when the last time I posted was, because I couldn't remember! So my last post was last Tuesday, right before I went to Indianapolis for the day on a business trip.

My trips to Indianapolis always seem to be interesting, lol. I started out by having my alarm JAR me awake at 4AM. I drove to the airport, parked, went to my gate (I had already printed my boarding pass Tuesday night) for the 7AM flight. Amazingly enough, it left on time. And...it arrived EARLY! Can you imagine? A domestic U.S. flight actually leaving on time and arriving early? It so rarely happens these days, it's shock when it does happen. Since my salesman was just leaving the hotel (he wasn't expecting me to be 20 minutes early), and wouldn't be there for about 10 minutes, I perused a book store for a few minutes then went and sat outside. This was a day trip, so all I had with me was my itty bitty purse and a notebook.

The salesman, John, arrived, and off we went to visit the customer. This customer is one I've gone to visit once a year since 2004 when I started working at Metal One. The customer is a stamping facility that makes the tops, sides, bottoms and ends for caskets. They have about 60 employees, and she is in charge of most of them. They are located on the border of Indiana and Ohio, about an hour and a half outside of Indianapolis. We chatted for a few minutes, then headed off to an early lunch.

Afterwards, John and I headed back to Indianapolis, for the second part of the trip. We were going to the warehouse where we store coils for that casket stamper, to do physical inventory. We needed to go out and physically account for every coil the warehouse said was there, and make sure it matched what we said should be there. It was about 95F that day, and at least that hot in the warehouse, plus we had to wear hard hats while out there (you never know when a coil might drop on your head, lmao.) Everything went smoothly, no missing coils, no extra coils, everything matched up, just as I figured it would. This place is really good about that stuff. I love dealing with them.

My flight home was supposed to leave at 6:31pm, arriving home at 6:41pm. No, it's not a 10 minute flight, lmao. There's an hour time difference between Chicago and Indianapolis, so the flight home was actually going to be an hour and 10 minutes. Note I said "supposed to leave at 6:31?" Yeah, that would be because it didn't actually leave then. First it got delayed to 6:47pm, then to 7:12pm, then to 8:21pm, then to 8:55pm. Argh! We did finally board by 8:55pm, but I'd had no dinner because by the time I was hungry enough to think about it, it was too late to go get anything. And the only place to really get anything was at a little restaurant in our concourse. Anything else, I would have to go back through security to walk to the other end of the airport. No thanks, I just wanted to get home by then. It probably took us another 15 minutes to pull back from the gate, then another 15 minutes to actually get out to the runway and take off. Fortunately, they were able to get a more direct route to Chicago, so the flight was only 30 minutes. I still didn't land until about 9pm, then had to walk out to my car and drive home.

I walked in the door at 10pm. I put 2 pieces of bread in the toaster, put some peanut butter on them, ate that while I got ready for bed, and was in bed asleep by 10:30, lol. I was exhausted the next day at work, and again on Friday. But I got all caught up on Saturday. After my stream Friday night, I was in bed at 11:30pm, slept until 8:30 when I moved from my bed to the loveseat in the living room cause it was darker there, then slept until 11:20am. I love love LOVE getting 12 hours of sleep, lmao.

I did pretty much nothing, nada, zip all weekend. My aunt is still trying to get over bacterial pneumonia, so I stayed home again on Sunday. Yay! I got to watch a full day of FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad Da Bears sucked, but Dallas won big! Woooo hoooooo!

So that brings us up to today/tonight...it's raining, cool, fall like temps (where's summer go?) and I can go back to posting more pictures, cause I'm sure AK will want to see some more very soon, lmao. (Do I have any more pictures to post? Hmmmm, I'll have to look.)
